Unfortunately, your marketing efforts do not always lead to the anticipated results.

Sometimes no one likes your social media post. They don’t respond to the opinion piece you published. Or don’t say ‘Yes!’ to your proposal.

When marketing your services, disappointments are inevitable.

Therefore, it helps to anticipate them and think of a way to deal with them:

Step 1 – Recover

Before you’re able to bounce back after a setback, you’ll need to recover.

When you expect a certain outcome and get something else, you’re easily dissapointed. Disappointment is a complex emotion related to sadness, which can lead to other emotions like frustration and anger.

Accept those feelings. Don’t be too hard on yourself. Maybe focus your attention on something else for a while. Give yourself a break: some time to recover.

Step 2 – Learn

Once you accepted your disappointment, see if there’s something to gain from the situation.

Have a look at your expectations. Were they maybe too high? Did you assess the situation that led to the disappointment correctly? Did you have all the information you needed to get to the outcome you expected?

Step 3 – Try again

Now that you assessed the situation and know if your expectations were realistic, you can go at it again. Maybe, in a different way. For a different audience. Or in a different situation.

In short, it’s like the late Aaliyah put it: “If at first you don’t succeed, dust yourself off and try again.”
