It’s almost impossible. To post something on LinkedIn and just get back to work.

Instead, you’re anxiously awaiting that first ping. That notification which tells you how many people ‘liked’ your post. Releasing dopamine in your brain. Providing instant feedback and immediate gratification.

Likes, comments, views and followers; they’re all vanity metrics. They look good. Heck, they even feel good. But in reality, vanity metrics hardly ever translate to meaningful business results.

Now, this is not to say that a ‘like’ on LinkedIn is utterly meaningless.

When marketing your services, you are building relationships and trust. LinkedIn can be an amazing tool for that. A ‘like’ from the right people at the right time can be of tremendous value.

All I’m saying is that you need to be honest about the right metrics for you.

Think about what success looks like to you. And, based on that, decide on the right metrics. Preferably actionable ones. That give you an idea of how far you’ve come in realizing your business goals.

When marketing your services, this can be the number of people that expressed an interest in your services. But also, the number of meaningful conversations you had with industry peers during an event. Or, the number of proposals you’ve sent out.

Keep building those relationships. Keep using platforms like LinkedIn. Just don’t get fixated on the vanity metrics that these platforms use to get us hooked. Instead use your own actionable metrics.

Hope this helps!
