Being a little weird can be of great help when marketing your services.

If you don’t know who Scott Galloway is, you’ve never watched him on stage, listened to his podcast, or read his newsletter. No matter what he does, professor Galloway tends to leave an impression.

During one of his keynote speeches, he suddenly turned into Adele. In his No Mercy / No Malice newsletter, he tends to ‘digress’ and go completely off topic with anecdotes about his family. And in his Prof G Show, he doesn’t shy away from being brutally honest, blunt, and dropping the occasional F-bomb.

Scott Galloway is not your typical business school professor. And therefore, he stands out.

Now, an important part of marketing is attracting people’s attention. And the easiest way to do this is by doing something your competitors can’t do or won’t do.

Don’t get me wrong. I’m not encouraging you to be like Scott Galloway. I’m encouraging you to embrace your quirks and use them to stand out.

Like everyone else, you probably have an unusual preference. Or you occasionally (like to) do things that don’t fit the norm. You may have learned to hide these quirks. However, your quirks make you you. They contribute to the uniqueness of your character.

Instead of hiding them, embrace your quirks. Maybe – when appropriate – play them up a notch. Allow your quirks to make you more authentic. Perhaps even more interesting and remarkable.

Don’t forget: in order to be heard, you first need to be noticed.
